Training Operators: What to Know Before the First Inspection
Buying the right camera is one decision. Getting a crew ready to actually run it, day after day, in the field, is a different one — and it's the part that determines whether an inspection program runs smoothly or turns into a string of avoidable delays. This isn't about unboxing the hardware or setting up the software; it's about what a new operator actually needs to know before they're standing over an open manhole with a live job to complete.
What "trained" really needs to mean
A camera can be technically easy to operate and still require real training, because the skill isn't really about the equipment — it's about judgment under field conditions. A new operator needs to be comfortable with:
- Reading the space before descending equipment into it. Knowing what a normal pipe interior looks like versus a sign of active deterioration, standing water, or root intrusion changes how carefully — and how slowly — a run needs to go.
- Working the controls without watching the controls. In the early days, an operator's attention should be on the footage and the pipe, not on remembering which button does what. That only comes with repetition.
- Recognizing when something needs a second look. A defect that looks minor on a live feed can be worth flagging for closer review later. New operators need a clear, simple standard for when to pause, re-run a section, or note something for the report — not a judgment call they're making alone for the first time on a real job.
- Basic troubleshooting in the field. A dropped connection, a fogged lens, a battery running low mid-run — these are ordinary occurrences, not emergencies, but only if the operator has seen them before and knows the fix.
None of this is about complexity for its own sake. It's the difference between an operator who can complete a job independently and one who needs a supervisor on the phone for every unexpected moment.
How long it actually takes
There's no universal number, because it depends on the operator's prior experience and how often they're in the field afterward — but a realistic expectation is a hands-on period measured in days, not weeks, followed by a few real jobs where a more experienced colleague is available to answer questions. The equipment itself is designed so that field teams don't need to be specialized technicians to operate it competently — but "easy to operate" and "ready to work independently" are two different milestones, and it's worth planning for both.
What actually gets someone ready, in practice
- Start with the equipment itself. Before anyone touches a live job, they should already be comfortable with the physical setup and first-run process — this is where the unboxing-to-first-inspection path matters: getting familiar with the hardware in a low-pressure setting removes one entire category of stress from a new operator's first real job.

Teams that plan for a short adjustment period tend to reach full efficiency faster than teams that don't, simply because nobody's improvising under pressure.
